Short version: you don't need an account, we don't sell anything about you, report photos are deleted once they're checked, and we never store where you were standing.

Who we are

Chale, How Much? (chalehowmuch.com) is an independent site showing what things cost in Ghana. Questions or requests: [email protected].

Browsing the site

You can use every page without signing up. To show prices in your currency, we look up which country your connection comes from (using Cloudflare's country signal or a country lookup on our own server). We use the country only and don't store it against you.

Like every website, our hosting (Fly.io) and network (Cloudflare) keep short-lived technical logs, such as IP address, page requested and time, to run the site and stop abuse. We don't use these logs to profile you.

Cookies and storage

cur: remembers a currency you pick by hand. It lasts one year.
rid: a random code set when you report a price, so two reports from the same phone can't confirm each other. It isn't linked to who you are. It lasts one year.
theme: remembers light or dark mode, and stays in your browser only.
Cloudflare may set a security cookie to tell people from bots.

We don't use analytics or tracking cookies.

Reporting a price

When you report a price, we store the item, the price, the venue or city, the time, and a name only if you choose to give one. Approved prices are shown publicly. Any name you give stays private and is never shown.

Location. If you allow it, your phone's location is compared with the venue's location to confirm you were there. The result (matched or not) is kept. Your coordinates are not.

Photos. Your photo is shrunk and stripped of its metadata (including GPS) as soon as it arrives. An automated reader (Anthropic's Claude) reads the prices on it: the one you reported, and the rest of the menu so we can add those too. A person then checks the prices it read against the photo. The photo is deleted as soon as that check is done, and never kept longer than 7 days. Anthropic processes the image under its commercial API terms and doesn't use it to train its models.

Advertising

The site doesn't show ads right now. If we add Google ads later, Google and its partners may use cookies to show and measure ads, including ads based on your past visits to this and other sites. You'll be able to turn off personalised ads at adssettings.google.com and learn more at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites. We'll update this page before any ads appear.

Who else handles data

Fly.io (hosting, UK), Cloudflare (network and security), Anthropic (reading report photos). Nobody else. We don't sell or rent data.

Your choices

You can clear the cookies at any time in your browser. To ask what we hold about a report you made, or to have it removed, email [email protected] and we'll reply within 30 days. This applies wherever you live, including under Ghana's Data Protection Act, Australia's Privacy Act and the GDPR.

Children

The site isn't meant for anyone under 13, and we don't knowingly collect anything from children.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes too. Big changes will also be noted on the home page.
